Afro-Brazilian Drum
at MARK MORRIS w/ Dandha da Hora
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE AT MARK MORRIS DANCE CENTER (3 LAFAYETTE AVENUE IN BROOKLYN).
Join us for a rhythm-centered workshop led by percussionist, dancer, educator, and cultural bearer Dandha Da Hora. Born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, and a longtime member of Ilê Aiyê, Dandha brings a deeply embodied approach to Afro-Brazilian traditions shaped through decades of performance and teaching.
In this class, Dandha will share Afro-Brazilian rhythms from the diaspora, teaching drumming as it connects to movement, culture, and community. Her approach to percussion comes from her experience as a dancer — learning to play out of necessity and curiosity in order to teach — and offers a unique perspective on how rhythms live in the body.
Participants will learn foundational techniques and ensemble arrangements of both sacred and secular rhythms, with an emphasis on listening, coordination, and group connection.
Open to all levels. Come ready to play, move, and engage with the rhythms in a holistic way. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN DRUM/PERCUSSION INSTRUMENT! These can be samba reggae/samba afro drums: surdo, repique, dobra/terceira, caixa/snare, and agogo. Hand percussion that can be played with sticks are welcome).
