Kongobeats at MARK MORRIS w/ Eto'o Tsana

KONGOBEATS

at MARK MORRIS DANCE CENTER w/ Eto'o Tsana

Eto'o Tsana

The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo have always known that the body is the first site of healing. Kongobeats is a movement workshop series that draws from the living dance traditions of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo-Brazzaville, reimagined through an urban contemporary lens for today's dancer and healing seeker.

Each class in this series moves through four traditions that share one truth: the hips, spine, chest, and pelvis are not just body parts. They are places where we store, carry, and release.

Kongobeats is a semi-live experience. The traditional sessions are accompanied by live drummers, bringing the heartbeat of each tradition into the room in real time. Participants will also engage with chants and songs connected to each form, and each traditional session opens with a brief historical lecture so that every movement is held in the cultural knowledge it comes from.

Dance classes will explore a selection of Congolese dance genres including Zebola, Soukous, Mutuashi, and Ndombolo, among others.

All levels are welcomed.
