DANCE FOR JOY 2026

Dance for Joy is a donation-based, 10-week workshop series culminating in a student performance. With support from the New York State Council on the Arts, we are able to make African and diasporic dance/drum accessible to everyone.  We ask our community to pay what you can, donating more if possible to help others feel the joy! ($5–$45)

This year's theme is Resilience. It's been a year of transition for Cumbe, and our community carried us through it. But resilience isn't only the ability to recover from hardship, it's the invention, the beauty, and the joy that African dance and drumming across the continent and throughout the diaspora have created under every circumstance. The energy, rhythms and movements we teach are that resilience in motion. This season we celebrate it, and cultivate more joy through dance.

Resilience

None of these forms survived by accident. Sabar kept its language through colonial rule. Samba was policed, and danced anyway. Haitian Folkloric dance holds a revolution’s memory in its footwork. Dunham-Informed Jazz built a technique out of a diaspora that had been told it had none.

Every style and rhythm we teach carries a story like this and every one of them is still here, being danced, still creating joy. This is what we want to celebrate with you as a community so come dance/drum with us and feel the JOY!

Inside the L10 Arts and Cultural Center. Enter through the glass doors closest to Whole Foods on Ashland Place. The studio is on the 4th floor and is accessible by elevator.
