Shaabi Dance Workshop
w/ Ragaey Hussein at MARK MORRIS
Cumbe presents a Shabbi Dance Workshop w/ Ragaey Hussein at Mark Morris Dance Center. Shaabi means “of the people” or “popular” in Arabic. It is the dance of Egyt’s everyday life, rooted in weddings, street culture, and the music, humor, and celebrations of ordinary people. In this workshop, you’ll explore its grounded movement, playful expression, and strong connection to rhythm and lyrics. For dancers, Shaabi adds a lively, down to earth style to the repertoire and shows a different side of Egyptian dance from the elegant, theatrical style of raqs sharqi. All levels are welcome.
