Shamadan - Egyptian Folkloric
at MARK MORRIS DANCE CENTER w/ Ragaey Hussein
Ragaey Hussein
Join Jaida’s special guest Ragaey Hussein and explore the luminous world of Shamadan dance, a beautiful Egyptian tradition with roots in ancient ritual. In Ancient Egypt, fire was sacred, symbolizing life, protection, and connection to the spiritual world. While dancers didn’t carry shamadans (candelabras) exactly as we see today, the art of moving gracefully with light comes from these ceremonial processions.
In this workshop, you’ll:
Learn the history and symbolism behind Shamadan, including its role in wedding processions (the Zeffa)
Practice dancing gracefully while carrying a shamadan
Explore movement as prayer, celebration, and a form of blessing
Embody the dancer’s role as a bearer of light and positive energy
Shamadan dance connects ancient ceremonial traditions with modern Egyptian dance, offering a unique experience that combines storytelling, culture, and joyful movement.
