Konpa Dance at 651 ARTS
at 651 ARTS w/ Julio Jean & Polo
Kickoff Haitian Flag Day with Julio and Polo! Wear and/or bring your flags, rep your flag colors, or just come prepared to celebrate! You will explore the foundations of konpa dance, whether dancing solo or with a partner. Julio and Polo will guide you through the rhythms, flow, and feeling of Konpa, creating an experience that celebrates culture, connection, and pure joy through movement. Join us for an extra hour with authentic Haitian food, drinks and of course more dancing!
Konpa is a soulful Haitian couples dance rooted in meringue, jazz, and Vodou rhythms. Born in Haiti in the 1950's with the sounds of Ensemble Aux Callebasses, Konpa quickly spread throughout the Caribbean, leaving its mark on styles like Soca, Kassav, and Zouk. Known for its smooth, hip-focused movements and fluid partner connection, Konpa is both joyful and deeply expressive.
